I met the Worlds Formula Drift Champion in Charlotte! What a surprise when I pulled up to the Street Wise Drift/Grip practice yesterday at the Metrolina Expo and saw the Falken Drift Team factory truck & their outrageous Mustang. The driver standing by the car looked very familiar. I don't follow drifting much but several years ago on Speed TV I watched the US beat Japan for the first time ever and remember it was a Mustang. That guy looks like the driver...YES!! It was Vaughn Gittin, JR (called J. R.).

Ian Stewart, president of Autosport Dynamics Inc (J.R's crew chief) came right up to my Saturn Sky after I went through tech and checked her out. They are in the process of converting a 2007 Sky into their 3rd East Coast drift car. I received a personal invitation to visit their shop soon and check it out. Really? Aren't' you guys from California? They just moved ½ their team to the East Coast and have a shop down the road.

Later in the afternoon my super charger belt shifted on the pulley while drifting & a little bit of gripping. I went to the Falken rig and waited for a mechanic to be free. JR saw me hanging around and asked if he could help. Cool, the world champion worked on my Sky.

JR took his 650+HP Mustang onto the course throughout the afternoon. Only in person can you get the true experience...sound, smoke, ground vibrating. The tires are huge and were changed after each run. Yep, that's where the Falkin sponsorship comes in.

Thanks Todd & Brian for this practice event! Only $40 bucks for way too many runs. All afternoon the wait time was 0-10 minutes. Driver's are not needed for work assignment so it's all PLAY time.

So as I watched people crowding around cars pulling off old tires and talking about the best line to take around the track I looked around and some thoughts came to mind. I glanced through the crowd with squinted eyes from the setting sun beating down and I saw so many things. I saw children playing under the bleachers only to pop their head up when they heard their dads name coming over the loudspeaker announcing it was their time to drift. There were people speaking Thai, Spanish and English of course all clapping when they got a chance to see a good clean run. In the show car area there was a 1934 Ford sitting across from a 2009 GTR. In the pits there was a felling of a common bond where people that had never met were borrowing tires, parts and tools just so they could see each other out on the track. I myself got caught up in the action when the little air compressor I brought pumped up tires on 4 different cars. There were people swapping buisness cards, phone numbers and most importantly driving tips! Even after some terrible wrecks into the wall once the cars made it back to the pits there were so many different hands going to work so another run could be done. I think as Americans with everything thats going on in the world even a local event like this can just for a moment stop us from trying to see whos different and make everyone feel the same just from being a car enthusiast. As I rub aloevera lotion on my sunburned face tonight before bed I can still smile and say man that was fun.....I cant wait to do it again....but with sunblock next time.

Wow, what a great event (from what I saw). I just happened to be in the concord area for my girlfriends cheerleading comp and was showing her where I grew up. We passed by the entrance to Concord Motorsports Park and told her that I never knew what was back there so she coaxed me to turn around and check it out. I couldn't believe my eyes as we pulled around back, to see all of the imports and whatnot. We only got to see a few runs and the finish, but I was very impressed. Great job to all of the drivers, and to the event staff.
